How to Calculate a Discount Price
Discount calculations help consumers and retailers find the final selling price of an item during sales promotions. It also shows the exact amount of money saved.
The Discount Formula
Saved Amount = Original Price × (Discount % / 100)
Final Price = Original Price - Saved Amount
Step-by-Step Calculation
- Convert the discount percentage to a decimal (divide by 100).
- Multiply the decimal by the original price to find your savings.
- Subtract your savings from the original price to find the final price you will pay.
For example, if a jacket costs $199.99 and has a 15% discount: the discount decimal is 0.15. The saved amount is $199.99 × 0.15 = $30.00. The final sale price is $199.99 - $30.00 = $169.99.
Frequently Asked Questions
To calculate 30% off, multiply the original price by 0.30 to find the discount amount, then subtract that from the original price. Or, simply multiply the original price by 0.70 (since you pay 70% of the price).
A 20% discount on $50 saves you $10 ($50 × 0.20), making the final price $40.
To calculate a double discount (e.g. 20% off plus an extra 10% off), first apply the 20% discount to get a subtotal, then apply the 10% discount to that subtotal. Do not add the percentages together (20% + 10% is not equal to 30% off because the second discount is applied to a smaller base).
